Selectmen lose insurance, libraries keep funding

I’m just back from the first night of Town Meeting, which lasted about 3 hours and 40 minutes by my reckoning. The members knocked off eight of the 29 articles on the warrant.

Among the winners is Article 4, a much anticipated bylaw change that eliminates health insurance benefits for selectmen and their families (but not those who are already receiving retiree benefits). Among the losers was a budget amendment that would have killed a $450,000 library technology project and an article that sought to increase the annual reimbursement paid to selectmen.

The vaguely threatening postcards received by Town Meeting members yesterday didn’t seem to have an impact on attendance, with 90 percent of the 240 members signing in.

Next up: Dualing leaf-blower restrictions, down-zoning in North Brookline and day care regulation.

Check back here for tomorrow for a full break down of the night’s votes.
